History of IDGA's NCW

IDGA’s NCW is the world’s largest annual gathering of net-centric thinkers and operators and the most respected event focused on network enabled operations.  Drawing hundreds of attendees from across the nation and around the globe, IDGA’s NCW is the place to be every January!

NCW 2009

January 27-30, 2009 • Washington, DC

2009 NCW BrochureThe theme for NCW 2009 was “Network Enabled Capabilities for Improved Command Decisions” and emphasized the networking and communications needs of the joint US and coalition warfighters.  Great strides were made to enhance battlefield situational awareness for improved safety and effectiveness of the warfighter.  Attendees left the summit with a deeper understanding of operator needs along with current and future capabilities development.

Alberts - Director of Research, OASD NII.

The 2009 NCW Awards™ saw the largest volume of submissions in its history, resulting in an exciting night for all parties involved.  The awards presentations were followed by dinner, entertainment, and a wine tasting.

NCW 2008

Network Centric Warfare 2008Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of VADM Arthur Cebrowski and John Garstka's landmark article on Network Centric Warfare, NCW 2008 proved to be an historic and symbolic event taking place at a time in which NCW was at a crossroads between the past and the future.

NCW 2008 focused on broadening the spectrum of network enabled capabilities and featured all new insights on AFRICOM, cybersecurity, strategic communications, and digital age business models for defense.

Some of the highlights from the 2008 speaker faculty included SECDEF Donald Rumsfeld; Col T.X. Hammes, USMC (Ret); Lt Gen Charles Croom, Jr, USAF; LTG Peter Chiarelli, USA; Theresa Whelan; Maj Gen John Maluda, USAF; David Weddel; Maj Gen Markku Koli; Maj Gen Koen Gijsbers; and Maj Gen Ton van Loon among many others.

The 2008 NCW Awards™ saw the return of the Arthur K. Cebrowski Award, while the reception featured an expert-led bourbon tasting extravaganza following the popularity of last year's whiskey tasting.

NCW 2007

Network Centric Warfare 2007Over 800 leaders from across the nation and around the globe convened at the world's largest gathering of NCW experts: IDGA's NCW. Once again, the event reaffirmed itself as the premier forum for exchange of ideas on network centric innovation by presenting the latest case studies and information on netcentric operations in theater and operations other than war.

Some of the highlights from this year's speaker faculty were Hon John Grimes, Lt Gen (ret) Harry Raduege, Congressman Jim Saxton, General (ret) Barry McCaffrey, Hon Dale W. Meyerrose, Dr. Thomas Barnett, and Terry Pudas among many others.

New in 2007 was the inaugural NCOIC™ workshop: A series of groundbreaking sessions that demonstrated the Consortium's netcentric strategy and analysis tools with case studies of real-world current use. Back by popular demand were Technology Day, NetCentric University, and the much coveted NCW Awards™.

NCW 2006

Network Centric Warfare 2006Year after year, IDGA's NCW grows to provide the best opportunity you will have all year to network with your colleagues in one place. NCW 2006 was no exception, with the addition of Technology Day, Netcentric University, 3-tracks on each day of the main conference, and more exhibitors sharing the latest technology and solutions available to support netcentric operations.

In 2006, the event brought delegates operational lessons directly from theater, including valuable lessons learned in OIF. Delegates heard the successes, failures, and expected challenges directly from US and Coalition forces. The distinguished panel of speakers included keynote presentations from General Richard Myers, Former Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff and John Ashcroft, Former Attorney General of the United States. The 2006 NCW Awards™ were emceed by Bob Losure, Former CNN Headline News Anchor.

NCW 2005

Network Centric Warfare 2005IDGA's NCW 2005 was the premier forum to review recent network centric operations, discuss and demonstrate innovative technologies, and develop the basis for policy, techniques, and tactics to be used in future conflicts.

IDGA was pleased to present a distinguished speaker faculty that provided attendees with a comprehensive picture of the current and future landscape of network centric transformation. The NCW 2005 elite panel of speakers included: George Tenet, Former Director of the CIA; LTG General Robert Wagner, USA, Deputy Commander, USJFC; Lt Gen Robert Shea, USMC, Director for C4ISR, Joint Staff, J-6; Lt Gen Klaus-Peter Stieglitz, Chief of Staff, German Air Force; and Lt Gen William Hobbins, USAF, Deputy Chief of Staff, Warfighting Integration.

NCW 2004

January 20-22, 2004 Washington, DC

Network Centric Warfare 2004By the third year of existence, NCW 2004 had become the premier forum for the exchange of ideas on network centric innovation in the US military. This conference addressed ways to leverage the power of the network to produce increased situational awareness, greater efficiency in theater, and ultimately a distinct warfighting advantage.

IDGA assembled an unmatched speaker faculty to present the leading developments in NCW. Delegates had the opportunity to hear from a senior-level, targeted group of individuals who are intimately involved with shaping future warfare doctrine and policy. Furthermore, NCW 2004 assembled experienced warfighters that explained how all of these concepts and initiatives actually perform in the battlefield -a truly unique and valuable perspective. NCW 2004 featured GEN Tommy Franks, USA (Ret), former Commander-in-Chief, USCENTCOM who delivered a keynote briefing on the impact of the network during OIF/OEF and how information-enabled forces fought more effectively.

This event also saw the launch of the NCW Awards™. The awards have been established to honor, recognize and promote initiatives in the US Department of Defense, Coalition Governments, and Defense Industry that exemplify the principles of network centric warfare and support information age transformation.

NCW 2003

Network Centric Warfare 2003With the shifting paradigms created through information warfare, the defense community has embraced network-centric warfare as an emerging concept that, in conjunction with enabling technologies, will help to transform our military into a robust, interoperable and efficient force. No longer a futuristic notion, the US and Allied Coalition Forces are incorporating NCW into their capabilities and beginning to implement many programs that support the core principles behind network-centric operations.

NCW 2003 provided the opportunity to hear from the key leaders that are making this concept a reality and implementing programs that will transform our Forces for 21st century warfare, featuring two of the leading visionaries on NCW: John Garstka, Office of Force Transformation, and COL (ret) Fred Stein, from MITRE.

New for 2003 was the not-to-be-missed Interoperability Panel Session, where leading representatives from OSD, JCS and Industry discussed the architecture and framework necessary to achieve true systems interoperability.

All of these critical issues produce opportunities and difficult hurdles that will drive the transformation towards a joint, networked military. In the age of information, military leaders have made it their priority to address network-centric warfare initiatives as their top visions and future strategies.

NCW 2002 featured the leading thought and operational leaders in this area delivering key presentations and perspectives on military dominance through information superiority. Speakers discussed the strategic planning, policy and implementation for network-centric warfare and shared present operations and future visions that are shaping the way that we exploit battlefield information.

The inaugural NCW 2002 featured an unparalleled international speaker faculty that delivered indispensable presentations such as: Lt Gen Charles F. Wald, USAF, Deputy Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations, John Garstka, the CTO at the Joint Staff Directorate for C4 Systems (J-6), ADM William A. Owens (ret), the former Vice-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the co-CEO of Teledesic and Congressman Curt Weldon (R-PA), the Chairman of the Military Procurement Subcommittee (House Armed Services Committee).
